Salesforce for grant management: alternatives for UK funders

Plenty of funders end up running grants on Salesforce, often because they already use it for relationships and someone configures a grants process on top. It can work. But Salesforce is a CRM platform you bend into a grants tool, not a grants tool out of the box, and that shapes the trade-offs.
What Salesforce is good at
Credit where due. Salesforce is excellent at relationship management, reporting and integration, and it is endlessly configurable. If you have in-house Salesforce expertise or an implementation partner, you can build a capable grants process, and keep grants close to the rest of your contact data.
Where the fit strains
The strain shows up in three places:
- Configuration burden. Grant-specific behaviour, eligibility logic, criteria weighting, condition-gated payments, 360Giving publishing, is something you build and maintain, not something that ships ready. That is consultant time and ongoing admin.
- UK specifics. Charity Commission and Companies House due diligence, UK data residency, and 360Giving are not native; they are integrations someone has to build and keep working.
- Audit-grade records. A configured CRM logs activity, but a tamper-evident, verifiable decision chain is not what a CRM is for.
None of this means Salesforce cannot do it. It means you are paying, in build and maintenance, for ground that a purpose-built grant management system already covers.
When a dedicated grants system fits better
If grants are a core part of what you do, and you would rather not run a configuration project, a dedicated UK grant management system gives you the lifecycle, the UK checks, the audit trail and the publishing out of the box. You trade some CRM flexibility for far less setup and a process built for funders.
Many funders run both: a CRM for relationships and a grants system for the grant lifecycle, joined by export and webhooks.
Grantledger is purpose-built for UK grantmaking, with built-in due diligence, a tamper-evident audit chain, condition-gated payments and one-click 360Giving, and a built-in CRM for grantee relationships, live in minutes rather than a build project.
